Winooski: The Brooklyn of Burlington

Originally a mill town, Winooski has several mills on the river that have been repurposed for modern use.

If you’re looking for a small city with big personality, look no further than Winooski. This vibrant, eclectic city packs more culture, community, and diversity into its compact footprint than anywhere else in Vermont.

Nestled just over the river from Burlington, Winooski stands out as the most densely populated city in the state, and one of the densest in all of New England, rivaling cities like Boston. Its density isn’t just a statistic; it’s a part of the city’s energy. People are walking, biking, dining, and gathering in close proximity, giving the city a sense of vitality you won’t find in sprawling suburbs. Indeed, it has an almost European feel to it.

Winooski is also Vermont’s most diverse city, and its school system reflects that pride. The rich mix of cultures here fuels the city’s dining scene, with restaurants offering flavors from around the world, from cozy neighborhood cafés to trend-forward eateries. Foodies and casual diners alike will find something to savor in Winooski. Check out our friend Elom’s place, Le Bon GouT to experience thrilling West African cuisine.

At the heart of downtown, Rotary Park is a unique hub of city life. Surrounded by traffic yet filled with greenery, it offers a moment of pause amid the bustle. From the vibrant Waking Windows music festival every Spring to the city’s annual Juneteenth celebration and the Downtown Block Parties, the Rotary captures the city’s playful, community-centered spirit.

Did I mention the farmer’s markets? Every Sunday from May to October, just off the Rotary on Winooski Falls Way, local vendors share their wares and goodies. It’s a celebration of independence, community, and the Vermont way of life.

My beautiful step-daughter, Dahlia, set up at the Farmer’s Market Youth Day in 2024.

On a personal note, this little city has always been part of my story. After I was born, my parents brought me home to their house on Bellevue Street, beginning my lifelong connection to the Noosk. During my college years, I had my first apartment at the Woolen Mill, a place that felt both historic and modern, much like the city itself. Today, I live in Winooski with my family, and my shop and offices are right here, in the heart of the city I love and am proud to call home.

Winooski isn’t just a city to pass through; it’s a city to live, work, and raise a family in. Its energy, diversity, and unique charm make it one of Vermont’s most exciting places, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I made this some time ago, and there have since been significant changes to the area, including the hotel and workforce housing development and the building where our shop, Dwellness by Steinmetz, is located.
